This is my new car, and has been the focus of my photography for a couple of weeks. This day was a perfect day out, accept it wasn’t the perfect day to photograph my car. I find that I really don’t care for bright days when taking photographs. I really do like overcast days better, just because the overall result is better on these days it seems. On bright days the colors really pop, but I feel you lose some of the detail, and lines of the car. These three seem to be the best of the days pictures so they ended up here. I like the first picture because the reflection on the cars window and paint looks very water like almost, its very clear. I like the contrast between green, asphalt gray, and Si Blue on the center photograph.

The Hydra Thought With Three Minds!

These three photographs were revealed at the latest show at the Noble Street Gallery. The show was a triptych based show, meaning it consists of three photographs that are usually created to tell some sort of story, or action. My triptych is of cars, which is something that I have been trying to focus on. The idea was to have the free different colors of the intersection lights as the story part of the triptych. At first I went at this taking just landscape and portrait angles of the car at different intersections. I didn’t like the produced effect of having just that angle, so I thought about it a little and decided to create an almost border, or lines that direct you towards the center piece. I angled the two outside cars (red and yellow lights) so that it sort of points into the center (green light) photograph. I ended up with what I think was a very cool effect, that led your eyes to a direct point in the series of photographs. The bad: The one picture I didn’t care for all that much was the center piece. I don’t like it as much as the other two, I think mainly because it doesn’t have such an interesting angle as the other two. But overall I was very happy with the product that I produced. My favorite picture of them all was the red light photograph. This one Was really cool, because of again, the angle, but also all of the surroundings. The yellow road markings give a nice contrast to the photograph that almost lead your eyes to a point at the front of the car. I also liked the background to this photograph, how there is a rather large hill that leads into the cloudy sky. Simple, but effective. I enjoyed doing this project a lot and think that in the near future I will be exploring triptychs more.

My main focus for the pictures this week was 100% cars. I forgot my tri-pod at home for the main photo shoot which sucks because with my camera it is very hard to take pictures at night without a tripod, any movement at all and the pictures become fuzzy. The lighting of these pictures was really great. We went to the University of Phoenix parking garage off of Broadway, and the lights there were very bright and white. It was nice to finally find a good place to do night shots. There are many different levels and actual garages to go to, this one had asphalt floors, which I didn’t mind at all. It added a nice contrast from the walls and surroundings. The other has concrete floors, and I really want to go there soon and take more photographs. There are also better angles at the other garage that will allow me to get height above the cars. I also wish my car looked better than it does. The primer grey really absorbs the light and doesn’t give off cool reflections like I wish it did. Hopefully soon I can have it painted. I think what make my photographs a success is the lighting. I enjoy the challenge of positioning the car in order to receive the proper lighting. If I could change anything I would change the car. I wish I had a car with more reflective surfaces.

The Thursday Three

This week I was feeling kind of dark. Most of my photo’s are on the darker side of the spectrum. I really didn’t have a main focus for taking pictures. I went out and looked for items that would appear interesting in a photograph. I noticed that my mother decorates with a lot of old bottles on top of a ledge in our home. These made for an interesting picture. At first I was just taking pictures of the bottles. I then realized that this is a good opportunity to take advantage of translucent objects. I turned the lights off In the house, eliminating as much un-natural light as possible and held a flame behind the bottles. It was a good change. It illuminated the bottles nicely, not too much either. It was also something different. I am used to taking pictures with the light to my back, allowing the object being photographed to have as much light as possible but in this case the main light source was behind the objects. The light of the flame also threw all kinds of shadows, adding just enough to make the photograph look full. The flames not only shone threw the bottles but they also reflected light as well. One last thing that I really liked about using a flame behind the glass is that it wasn’t too much, unlike light bulbs the flame didn’t give off unwanted ugly light, but a very natural peaceful light. So many different shades appear in the photographs it is really cool. It ranges from a very bright center of the flame, to an almost invisible blending darkness towards the top. The last one of my car I like because again, it was a darker picture and how everything looks almost amber. The entire picture has an almost amber glow. I also like how the turn signals kind of streaked, drawing your eyes to them. The one thing I wish I could change on this photograph is the other tan bmw sitting next to it. I wish it was only of the single car rather than a randomly parked vehicle next to it.

Client Job 2222222

I am doing work for my client, Jeff Henderson. For the first job I did a business card for him, based on the company he works for. For this project however, I did an advertisement for something the client has recently started, and hopes to take further, creating a small business. The ad created was done for this business called Ty-Gar. He has already sold many of the products and was excited when I brought up the idea of doing an early advertisement that will hopefully later be posted on a website that I am also currently helping to create. I was given an almost blank canvas to work with. I came up with several texts to try out and tried to create a professional looking advertisement. On the second advertisement the client liked the text, and the overall look, but the text was a little hard to read, after looking it over I had to agree and went and made a few minor changes making the text more visible. I know I could have used my time better, and I need to really jump the gun on these projects much earlier. I think that the finished product will work well; the possible advertisements are easy to read, simple and flow well.

For client job one I made business cards for the client. The main purpose of the different business cards was to use different images to see which direction the client wanted to go. He ended up choosing the first one… Within 24 hours there will be the second client job posted above this… the next job was done for the same client but a different business, and the following jobs to come will be for this new business as well.

The modern age clashes with our rural lives.

The main focus of my photographs changed over time. I enjoy going out with friends and taking pictures of cars, and the surroundings that are constantly brought with the car enthusiast lifestyle. I am new to this genre of photography and it is taking me places I didn’t think I would go, and it is proving to be harder than expected. I am learning more and more with each photo shoot and I feel that this represents one of my best car shots so far. It includes many elements of a good photograph. It feels well balanced, and the colors really pop in your face. The lighting is very unique when taking photographs of cars. Especially at night, with few lights on anything but the focus, of course the car makes them really stand out from the night sky background. The shapes of cars also make them stand out from anything natural or square in the surroundings. Curves and lines make them their own. The two later pictures I took in South Dakota. I recently had the opportunity to stay on a farm and it produced wonderful pictures. The first picture of the barn turned out well due to the lines. It had contrasting lines of vertical and horizontal lines in the wood of the barn, and in the fence. The lighting of the photo is also well used. It has contrasting of brights directly hitting surfaces of the wood and fence to dark, dark shadows. The one thing I wish I would have changed in this photograph is I wish I would have taken a portrait rather than a landscape. I need to learn to turn the camera more often… it’s just something I forget almost every time that would really change up my photographs. The last was really kind of cool. I was out walking around and saw a deer; I was trying to sneak up to the dear to get a unique photograph, and ended up spooking it. But I looked down and under a tree found a really cool looking bottom jaw skeleton. I situated it on the fence and proceeded to snap pictures. Among the photographs I took of the lower skull piece I chose this one because of the angle. I like how you can see up between where the tongue would be and you see nothing but a clear blue sky. The colors of the white-ish, grey skull and blue blue sky blend very well together. The curved blades of grass and straight barbed wire fence give the picture character. The weeds among the picture fill it well, and aren’t too heavy either. The one thing I wish I could change about this is where the flash hit on the bottom part of the jaw. It makes it blurry and feel almost un-natural. My overall habbits are really helping me get better at pictures. Recently I have really gotten into taking photographs of cars, and learning how to take better and better photographs especially at night time. It was very hard to get a good picture of a friends car at night but as I learn to use different settings, Use the tri-pod and other techniques it becomes easier and easier. It really helps the more I practice.

“Classic”

This is a piece that was shown at the noble street gallery.

My main focus of the black and white pieces I was taking was of cars. I ended up using a photograph I am calling “Classic”. The antique look of the emblem itself flows nicely with an old time black and white photograph. The focal point of this photograph is the emblem itself, against the flat background it stood out the most, and also reflected the most light, shapes, and shades. What makes this piece a success is the complexity of the materials in the photograph. A mixture of paint, and chrome gave great shadows and reflective surfaces; combined with nicks and scratches that give character. The photograph I feel is good, it sparks emotion. Feelings of remembrance of anything old, antique, Classic… This is one of my favorite photographs; I love cars and really enjoy looking at this picture. I wouldn’t change a thing. As for time, I just hope to take many more photographs and have many options for the next selection.

My self portrait: This is a picture that represents a part of me not a lot of people see. Most only see a shy, timid version of me. I am a shy person until I am close with the other person, or I am with friends. It’s probably not good but oh well. The main focus of my photograph is of course me. Being a self portrait and all. There are not a lot of lines, other than myself and the lines of my shadow. Also, there are lines on the left side of my shirt. I really like these lines because they show depth and create lots of contrast; especially on the left sleeve. I used lighting like I never had before and really like how you can manipulate a picture to say what you mean using the light. I look foreword to using this new found technique further. I think what makes my photograph a good one, is that it’s sort of unexpected. It is kind of scary, but you also see a glimpse of a smile. It’s goofy. If I could change anything at all I would change where I was in the photograph. I would move the camera possibly further down, and move it further to the left. (moving my body further to the right of the photograph.)
