I recently went to eastern Arizona, to a place called eagle creek, and these photographs were taken there. I like the first photograph because of the angle. It seems like the tree’s and everything is wrapping around. I like how all the textures and colors contrast. The water is kind of choppy, and reflects the green of the trees and the blue skies. The second I like for the shapes. There are many square pieces of wood, and then also wood that is round like logs can be seen. I like the contrast of the darkness of the inside and bright exterior. The third is my favorite of the three. The photo is successful because there is a high amount of texture that capture a rustic old feeling. I also like how the left side of the photograph is in focus, and the right side, which belongs mostly to the background is out of focus. I really like this effect and am getting quite good at using it in my photography.

•April 24, 2008 • Leave a CommentThe first picture is of an emblem on my car. I find that I enjoy taking pictures of the small things on cars. Details really interest me. What makes the picture is how so much is out of focus, yet what is in focus is precise. The second picture is really raw. It feels sharp, coarse, rough… just harsh feeling. I really like how the smoke is rising in a single line from a very dark source. The one thing that I wish I would have taken a clearer picture, it just seems kind of muggy. The third is of a shift knob, and I like this because of how sharp the reflections are on the center of the metal, but you can read the script on the side. The background turned out really interesting too. Its nearly all dark, adding huge contrast, but a luminous glow appears in the top right corner. I enjoy the bottom 1/4 of the metal because you can see lines, it just looks raw, cold and hard.

•April 24, 2008 • Leave a CommentWhen I first started taking pictures I didn’t use many portrait photographs, now it seems that I have too many of them!? So I wanted to add in a decent looking landscape. Lighting really interest me, and I like to play with them. Bottles provide an amazing opportunity to distort light and this is about the third time I had taken them out just simply to try and photograph. This picture turned out good because of contrast. Although the entire photograph appears as an amber glow, different shades ranging from dark black to bright orange-reds. I realize now that I like to leave a lot of dark in my photographs, It seems to give room for interpretation. I like the second photograph for originality purposes. I really don’t see many, or don’t notice many pictures where it starts blurry at the bottom and as it works up it becomes clearer. The angle was pretty odd as well. Another thing I have realized is I like to try and lead the viewers eyes. If you can lead the person viewing to something, be it the main focus ( and it usually is ) or something of some other importance you have probably taken a successful photograph. Having that much control, I feel would be a useful talent. I like the third because it incorporates two of the techniques I have been trying to get better at. I used contrast and focus again for this picture. The lighting was low, and I was focused on just a couple of words, so the others that trail of into the distance become blurry. The contrast was kind of unique in this photograph and mostly appears in the mirror above the text, the lights really reflect and work well as a background.

•April 24, 2008 • 1 CommentThese three pictures were taken of my car(s). I wanted to focus on a skill that I have seen and like. The first is good because of mostly how it was taken. I wanted to try and take pictures where just one thing was in focus. I think that I accomplished this technique and it worked very well. I really like how vivid the red and blues are on the lanyard. The second photographs angle really is what makes it. It has a large empty, smooth, and bright surface that leads into the emblem. I like how the emblem is very textured, it adds what I feel is something of character. The third I like again because of the angle, I went back to the keys but got under them for an interesting angle. I wanted to try to get just the keys in focus again, but it was not as successful as the first.
CAVES!
•April 20, 2008 • Leave a CommentThese photographs were taken a couple of weeks ago when I visited Carlsbad Caverns. First I would like to mention how hard it was to take photographs down inside the caves. I like the first picture a lot mostly because of how amazingly it shows the texture of the wall. I also like the high contrast between dark shadow and nearly white surface of the rock. I like the second picture due to high contrast again, and I also like how part of the rock is a vibrant green. It adds something interesting to the picture that ended up being the focal point. The last picture is one I like because of texture, and also because It gets very dark in the corner, and its kind of spooky. It also directs your eyes and makes it appear your looking up.
The Dodge Dart
•April 9, 2008 • Leave a CommentThese three are of my car. I havent gotten out to take quality pictures of it in some time so I figured I would. Here are three of my favorites from the shoot. The first I like a lot, the lines and reflections are what make the picture interesting. The lines and light direct your sight deeper into the picture. The second I like again, and I think mostly because its at an odd angle. I like the third picture a lot mainly due to how there is a large empty stretch of road, and as your eyes follow it leads to a car. I also kind of like how it makes the top half heavier as well.

•March 3, 2008 • Leave a CommentThis photograph is called Friday Nights. I came upon the title, simply because that’s what we usually find ourselves doing on any given Friday or Saturday night. Just hanging out with friends, talking cars and enjoying Tucson nights. I really love the symmetry of the photograph most; appealing to the part of me that most days feels balanced. Cutting the two outside cars really makes the photograph feel wide; which is something that I find I like about the photograph. This in combination with quite a distance of road in front of the cars makes the photograph appear “open”. One thing I wish that I could change about the picture is all the distracting noise in the background. The lighting from signs and other streetlights can be a bit distracting at points. I do however like the amber glow coming from inside the pharmacy. The focus of my photography has really changed from taking mostly photographs of natural objects (tree’s, plants, animals) to taking photographs of mostly cars, and other man made objects. Especially with cars, I find it almost challenging getting the angles, tones, and lines that make for professional car photography. Getting the right spot for photographing cars is also a challenge. Backgrounds need to be interesting yet simple, and especially at night, proper lighting is scarce. I feel that I am growing as an automobile photographer, and hope that opportunities lead me to more of this type of photography in the near future.
